Basilica of Bom de Jesus
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a church, which is situated in Old Goa, and is an excellent example of Baroque architecture. Basilica of Bom Jesus was constructed in the year 1605 and is one of the most important destinations for Christian pilgrims from all over the world. One of the most important attractions here are the mortal remains of the missionary Saint Francis Xavier.
St Cajetan’s Church
This is the most beautiful of all churches of Old Goa. The church is built in Corinthian style. It is said to be modeled on the design of Basilica of St. Peter in Rome and is built of laterite blocks which are lime plastered. Originally named The Church of Our Lady of Divine Providence, the church is named after its founder St. Cajetan.
Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount is situated on the top of the hill behind St. Cajetan Church. It was built in 1510 by Alfonso de Albuquerque after his victory over the Muslim ruler Yusuf Shah. This place has been featured in many movies like All The Best, Zeher, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. A must-visit for movie fans. The place looks like heaven during sunset.
Church of Reis Magos
The church of Reis Magos was constructed in 1555 shortly after the construction of the Ries Magos Fort. It is dedicated to St. Jerome. Historians have evidence that the church was built on the ruins of an old Hindu temple. Two former Portuguese viceroys have been buried here. Every year on the 6th of January, the locals celebrate the journey of the three kings who went to worship the Infant Jesus and the trip starts from the Church around the whole village.
The Se Cathedral de Santa Catarina is also known as Se Cathedral and is one of the most ancient and celebrated religious buildings of Goa. It is the largest Catholic Church in Asia. It is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria. Alfanso Albuquerque defeated the Muslim army and took possession of the city of Goa on Feast Day of the Saint in 1510, thus the name St. Catherine’s Cathedral. UNESCO has declared it a heritage site.
Church of St. Francis of Assisi
The Church of St. Francis of Assisi is a heritage construction, which was built in the year 1660 by the Portuguese as a chapel, and was later given the status of a church. Now a part of Old Goa, the church boasts of impressive architecture, and has some remarkable sculptures and paintings within its complex.
